With summer now officially underway, there will be plenty of activities to enjoy in the High Country these next few months. Here are some highlights for July:
Friday, July 2 – Park Dance, Memorial Park, Blowing Rock, 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Live music with Diana & Sarvis Ridge and Sweet T to celebrate Independence Day. For more information, call 828-295-5222.
Friday, July 2 – Red, White and Blue Wines Tasting, 5:30 p.m. at Christopher’s Wine & Cheese. Join Christopher and staff for a fun and informative study of wine. $15 in advance. For more information, call 828-414-9111.
Saturday, July 3 – 9th Annual Echota 4th of July Celebration, Echota Clubhouse, noon to 3 p.m. Join us for a parade, barbecue, blues music, fun and more! For more information, call 800-333-7601.
Saturday, July 3 – 4th of July Festival and Parade, Downtown Blowing Rock. Games, music, and a Main Street parade. For more information, call 828-295-5222.
Saturday, July 3 – Mountain Home Music: Bluegrass, Bagpipes & Burgers at Chetola Resort,
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Bagpiper Sarah Storm and trumpeter Bill Jones will join Joe Shannon and the Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys. The air will be filled with Celtic melodies, traditional bluegrass, and plenty of stirring patriotic tunes. Arrive early for food and beverages; the concert will end before the fireworks begin. Sunday, July 4 – Independence Day Celebrations. These will include a parade in Banner Elk (for more information, call 828-898-8195), the Beech Mountain July 4 Celebration (800-468-5506) and Celebration on the Riverwalk at Newland (828-733-2023). And Tweetsie Railroad will host fireworks. Park will be open until 9 p.m., with parking for fireworks show $5. For more information, call 800-526-5740.
Monday, July 5 through Friday, July 9 – Price Pals at Julian Price Park, Milepost 297, Blue Ridge Parkway. Join rangers for an entire week of awesome, outdoor activities for kids. Friday will be a grand day of multiple activities. For more information, call 828-295-3782.
Monday, July 5 – Monday Night Concert Series, Broyhill Park, 7 p.m. Enjoy a free concert on the lawn by Mayview Lake. Rain location is American Legion Building on Park Avenue. For more information, call 828-295-5222.
Thursday, July 8 through Sunday, July 11 – Grandfather Mountain 54th Annual Highland Games, McRae Meadows at the base of Grandfather Mountain. Four days of the annual Gathering of Scottish Clans, including many events involving traditional dancing, Scottish bagpipes, drumming, athletic achievement, music and Gaelic culture. Sunday, July 11 – Larry Lapin with Michelle Amato in Concert, Meadowbrook Inn, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Presented by the Blowing Rock Jazz Society. Friday, July 16 through Sunday, July 18 – Dora and Diego at Tweetsie Railroad. Meet Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer and her cousin Diego from Go, Diego, Go! Park will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 800-526-5740.
Friday, July 16 and Saturday, July 17 – 4th Annual High Country MusicFest, Boone. Initial artists are John Cowan, Balsam Range, Terry Baucom/Alan Johnson & Friends, and Southern Accent. More are being added daily. MC is Cindy Baucom from the syndicated radio show “Knee Deep In Bluegrass.” Terry Baucom will be conducting a banjo workshop. For more information, call 828-733-8060.

Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18 – 19th Annual Avery County Fine Art and Master Craft Festival, Banner Elk Elementary School. 80 juried artists will be showcasing their expertise on the school’s lawn of the on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many of these are artists have traveled the world mastering their art or perfecting their craft from one generation to another. Saturday, July 17 – Art in the Park, American Legion Grounds in Downtown Blowing Rock, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A juried art and craft show featuring 100 artists. For more information, call 828-295-7851.
Friday, July 30 – Black Bear Books Grand Re-Opening at 4 p.m., 2146 Blowing Rock Road. Boone’s best local book store will be hosting celebrations of this event throughout the weekend. For more information, call 828-264-4636.
